VICKI LANKFORD

My neck of the woods - click for larger image

I majored in Art at Radford University in Virginia and have always enjoyed the design process.  The mediums I have worked in range from oil painting to pottery to textile design.  In 2001 I visited a friend that had recently purchased a mosaic mirror from an art show, I was enchanted and my obsession began.  The first year was a learning experience.  However, it  soon became apparent that I had to have an outlet for my creations and I began researching local (Central Florida) art shows.  In November 2002 I was accepted into my first juried art show.  I continue to show in many Florida venues including art festivals and galleries.  In addition, I was fortunate to have a gallery exhibit "Interpretations" in September of 2005.

I was born in Florida, grew up near Washington D.C. and returned to Florida in 1971 (The picture to the left is of 'my neck of the woods', here in Florida).
I have been married since 1969.

My husband is my sounding board.  I drag him into the studio when I am unsure of a particular direction.  Often just explaining the situation, solves the problem for me and if not, he is always ready with an answer.  I am lucky to have him.  We are the parents of two wonderful grown daughters.  Our eldest daughter lives in northern Florida , married a great guy and they now have the "best grandson ever!".  In November of 2012, she added a perfectly adorable grandaughter to our family.   Currently she is busy being a Mom and is a professor at a north Florida University.  She is still the best coach and professor ever though.  Our youngest daughter lives in Central Florida and has strong artistic abilities.  She is Mom to grandson  No. 2 (another "best ever") and we couldn't be happer with the new grandbaby.  I am currently (gently) pushing her to join me at shows with her own booth.     She is a Licensed Massage Therapist....the best ever!   (The daughters have to share the "best ever" titles and now they also have to share it with my Son-In-Laws and Grandsons and Granddaughters and...)  If you come to my shows, you might catch my husband helping me to set up or take down, and one of the "best ever" daughters helping me during the show itself.

Although mosaics are an ancient art, it is never "old" for me.  Each piece is different, either because of the shape of the object or the materials used to create it.  This keeps the art new and creates tremendous opportunities to learn and grow as a mosaic artist.  I enjoy the challenge.   I was asked by  a fellow mosaicist, "How do you know when you are good enough"?  I believe you are never good enough, you can never stop growing, searching or reaching for new experiences.  If you are "good enough" you will stagnate.  I hope to never be good enough and that I will always be searching a new mosaic path.

Vicki Lankford - San Juan, Puerto Rico
Talking to the "Locals" in San Juan

Fall of 2013:

Vicki went where?....

This year our travels took us to the Eastern Caribbean.  We spent a few days in Old San Juan before embarking on a journey south to the Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbados,  St. Maartin and St. Lucia.  Old San Juan was a lot of fun, we had plenty of time to wander around, enjoy all the local food and beverages (I had a Pina Colada in the restaurant in which it was invented..  I must say, it was the best, ever).  The people were warm and friendly and I had fun speaking Spanish (even if it is rather a non gramatically correct version, I was understood.... mostly.  :-D)  The rest of the islands we found some really interesting places to visit... the Pitons, a zip line in Barbados, forts, beautiful waterfronts and more.
It was a great trip and we have a lot of  souveniers.    As always, I found a few special things that will be incorporated into my work.  Most of my work is centered around water themes, so this trip just fed my mosaic addition, adding idea after idea.
We may take a few long weekends to some places around the States, then....

Next year?  VENICE!!!  I just can't wait for this one.  We are spending several days in Venice (enough time to really explore) then heading to Greece (Santorini), Croatia, and Turkey.  As you may have guessed, I love travel and haven't been anywhere that I haven't enjoyed.

Have a great year, come say "hi" at one of my shows...  See you then,

Vicki
